vmware, vlan, firewall

Our internet used to come into a small switch, through a physical firewall, then to the main swithch, where our 3 esx'es are also connected.

Now the firewall has been virtualized, so the small and big switch is connected, and the virtual firewall as both legs to the same switch.

It appears to give no problems, as inside and outside is on different subnets, routed through the firewall.

But still, I'd like to keep the inside and outside separate...

There is not enough physical nics on the esx'es to have the outside on a separate nic.

I can create a "Virtual machine port group" with vlan 99 on a vSwitch, where I can connect the "outside leg" of the firewall.

But where should I "Tag" the internet connection? There are 3 locations, listing outside to in:

  • A: The port from the media converter (fibre) on small switch
  • B: The port going to the "main" switch from small switch
  • C: The port in the main switch coming from small switch

The switches are Dell, with options

On page Vlan membership:

  • Not member
  • Untag egress packets
  • Tag egress packets

On page "Vlan port settings"

  • pvid [1-4095] (99, I think)

Frame type:

  • Admit all
  • Admit tag only

Ingress filtering:

  • Enable
  • Disable

Where and what should I set?

  • I'm assuming you manage the ESXes over separate pNICs. Otherwise (though it's not best practices) you just handle the management network the same way as the VM networks below.

You begin with the physical switch your ESXes are connected to. Configure VLANs "outside" and "inside". Connect the ISP to outside VLAN, everything else to inside VLAN. The pNICs used by VMs are special: configure the physical ports to be trunks with all VLANs on them, with 802.1q tagging. I'm not familiar with your switches, but I believe the above will be achieved if for VM traffic ports you use "tag egress", "admit tag only", pvid doesn't matter, ingress filtering enable, and all non-VM traffic ports have untag, correct pvid (the one that corresponds to the outside or inside VLAN based on what's connected to it), admit all, ingress filtering doesn't matter.

Then go into ESX and create a single vSwitch for all VMs.

On that vSwitch, you create two portgroups, "outside" and "inside" (the first port group is created as you create the vSwitch, then you add another one by going through the same "Add Networking" wizard, but reusing an existing vSwitch). They both should have VLAN IDs assigned to them, the outside VLAN and the inside VLAN correspondingly. Then attach your firewall VMs to both port groups (one vNIC to each port group), and attach your internal VMs to inside port group only.

VMware reference document is this: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx3_vlan_wp.pdf and you're looking for the section that describes "VST".

Exchange 2003 very reliant of 1 of 4 AD servers, Freezes without it

On-site we have 3 of 4 AD servers (AD1,AD2 and AD4) with AD1 having most of the Operational Master Roles, however when AD2 goes down, freezes or reboots outlook says 'waiting for exchange server AD2', when exchange is on a different box completely. AD4 was just built from scratch and added hoping to get around this reliance on AD2 but it doesn't seem to have any effect, had a look through exchange settings and couldn't find any locations it points to AD2 and no other active directory servers.

Would appreciate some help on the matter, Thank You

  • Ditto joeqwerty. You don't mention whether are in the same AD site (I appreciate they're in the same physical site).

Automated backup of S3 to another cloud

Is there a service out there to auto backup our S3 account to a external cloud?

  • I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but it's really trivially simple to do with the S3 API, and another cloud's API. You'd probably need an intermediate server, unless the 3rd party has a HTTP Pull method.

I'd probably set up an EC2 micro instance running ubuntu, or something, and script a cronjob that copies new files to the other cloud. You could use find to find files which had been modified/created since the last cronjob run.

I'd probably do it in python with python-boto. Seems to work quite well for that kind of S3 manipulation.

If your cloud provider has a HTTP Pull method, then you could just set the ACL on the S3 objects to allow authenticated HTTP access, and copy them over that way.

Server HTTPS access not working after re-install

Hello, I've setup a Citadel groupware server, plus its WebCit web admin interface. It worked well with HTTPS access. However, I had to reinstall the server, and when I try to access the server again via HTTPS, I get the following error in Firefox:

You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent and give them the following information:

Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new certificate containing a unique serial number.

(Error code: sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial)

What can I do on the server side to alleviate this problem? Or is it simply a matter of resetting something in Firefox?? What would be a way to prevent this problem in the first place? Thanks.

  • I've seen this error before while using FireFox with a WiFi router - it's annoying, because FF does not behave as you'd expect (i.e. let you add an exception and be done with it).

Granted, the problem is with your SSL certificate (it should have a new serial number when it is generated) but because the cert is generated with a hard-coded value it is going to be easier to apply a workaround for FireFox.

Here's the fix that worked for me:

Thinking "How does it know?" I thought it must be storing the certificate elsewhere. I shut down Firefox, opened my profile directory, found cert8.db, renamed it and started Firefox. The cert8.db file was recreated and I was able to add the exception for the new certificate.

How can I remotely wipe an iPhone owned by our company?

We have a number of user's in our company who are using iPhones that have been provided by our company.

How can I remotely wipe out all data on an iPhone owned by our company?

  • If you're using exchange look here if using MobileMe look here

  • Do you use a Microsoft Exchange Server? Iphones connected to such a server can be remotly disabled or wiped. You could also search the App-Store for an Anti-Theft software like F-Secure Anti-Theft

[ESX4] Changing service console default gateway affect VM connectivity?

Hi all,

if I change the default gateway of the ESX 4 service console virtual machines connectivity will be affected? Virtual machines must not be disconnected as they are in production environment

Thank you all for help

  • No. But as with any change like this, test it out on a non-critical environment first, and perform the actual cut-over during the period where there's least impact if the services do go down.

Always plan it like it's going to fail.

Traffic for the VMs themselves flow over a seperate VM Network definition. Which could potentially be bound to the same network adapter, but they don't use the service console for traffic.

Chopper3 : Agree with Chris, from a VM perspective a vSwutch is a purely L2 function so yo changing a L3 property won't have any effect.
  • Changing the SC IP or gateway won't affect the VMs. For example, we've changed the IP of our SCs before, causing the host to be disconnected in vSphere, but a quick re-connect brings it back in, with no guest interruption.

VMWare Workstation VM Will not Connect To The Internet or Host

I just installed VMWare Workstation 7.1.2 on a Win7 machine a but it will not connect to the Internet I saw it creates two VMWare Network Adaptors labeled VMNet1 & VMNet8 with 192.168.x.x network addresses. Any reason why it will not connect to the Internet on a default installation? It used to work flawlessly on XP in the past when I installed it.

  • I changed the Networking on the guest to Bridged & that worked like a charm.
